Explaining Post Covid Hair Loss

There are a few ways to describe this type of hair loss, telogen effluvium or diffuse hair loss. Both of these represent the hair is falling out of the normal hair cycle, diffusely over the entire scalp. This results in double the daily hair loss and diffuse hair thinning. This type of hair loss is not in patterns or patches as in other types of hair loss or hair thinning.

Understanding the hair cycle; every hair on our head is in a cycle of either growing, resting, or falling. In the hair falling phase of the hair cycle, we lose between 70-160 hairs every day diffusely over the head. When there is a disturbance in the body, such as fever, medication, deficiency, thyroid or adrenal imbalance and stress (stress alone does not cause hair loss), it can cause the hairs in the anagen growing phase of the hair cycle to prematurely enter the falling phase causing diffuse hair loss. This results in up to double the normal daily hair loss which can look like hair loss of over 300 hairs a day, referred to as hair loss.
Diffuse hair loss or telogen effluvium occurs 3 months after the body disturbance, so it is easy to establish a timeline to be sure of the cause. Once this type of hair loss starts, it will continue for three months, you cannot stop this hair loss, but we can help to slow it down and make sure your health is in the right place for normal hair regrowth. You can wait it out and see how the hair regrows on its own, but that takes up to 12 months, and if something is missing, the hair does not grow back normally resulting in diffuse hair thinning from a cellular level.
