There has been a study to investigate the association between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and male pattern hair loss (MPHL) in young men. The study of young Chinese people aged 18–45 years old, showed those who consumed excessive SSB had a higher likelihood of reporting MPHL.

Nutrition and hair loss a new perspective

Anxiety disorder status and disease history might mediate the association between SSB consumption and MPHL. Emphasizing that SSB consumption could have a potential negative effect on one’s appearance, could catch the attention of the young population and promote a reduction in SSB intake and healthier lifestyle choices.

Nutrition and male pattern hair loss

As Trichologist at Absolique Hair Health Clinic, I have helped many men prevent, treat and reverse male pattern hair loss. The key to successful treatment is a healthy person. The before and after images we share here are a young man experiencing early onset male pattern hair loss.

He had a very unhealthy diet and lifestyle along with stress. We spent a lot of time helping to correct some of these habits and swapping for healthier options and the results 4 months apart, show the significant improvement one can achieve. We did use some topical treatment too.

Diet and male pattern baldness

Male pattern baldness has a hormonal influence, so it is very important to avoid hormones in your food. The main place hormones are found in food are animal proteins. Choose instead:

  • Hormone free chicken
  • Grass fed beef
  • Organic eggs
  • Wild caught fish

Vitamin d and male pattern baldness

Humans need Vitamin d for immunity, hormones, and cholesterol amongst many other things. Research has proven links between low vitamin d and male pattern baldness. We can get vitamin d from sun and nutrition. Nutrition can be food and/or supplementation, that will depend on your current level of vitamin d. Blood test is recommended to find your current vitamin d before using supplements.

Dht and male pattern baldness

Dht is the main cause of male pattern baldness. 2% of your entire testosterone converts to dht by 5 alpha reductase, it happens to all humans and is required for our integumentary system and homeostasis, essential for body balance.

However, things come along and trigger your dht to bind where it does not belong. Male pattern baldness is dht triggered to bind to scalp follicle receptors at recessions, top, front, crown of head. The triggers are:

  • Hereditary
  • Hormonal – own and synthetic
  • Environmental – endocrine disruptors
  • Free radical effect – no protecting antioxidants

It is the above triggers that make the dht bind where it does not belong. For men, dht also binds to the prostate. Look at family history, find average age of onset to see if the male pattern thinning is hereditary or has other triggers. You can have male pattern hair thinning without hereditary triggers.

Hair loss pattern male

Male pattern thinning is not physical hair loss. That is an important key to note for correct diagnosis. Physical hair loss related to the hair cycle can expose slow progressing male pattern thinning. Telogen effluvium or diffuse hair loss can cause early onset male pattern hair thinning. If pattern hair thinning is progressing quickly, there is another associated factor.
