Traction Alopecia question: Hi Dr. Carolyn. Thank you for all of your hard work and detailed videos. I have a derma stamp(er). I recently started using it. I am a black male that used to have braids, and they really damaged my scalp. I believe it’s called traction alopecia. My left and right temples are bald and the same for my crown, but the rest of my hair grows fine and fast. I wanted to know if I could talk to you about my condition, will this derma stamp bring back my hair, how long will it take, etc? Thankyou.
Traction Alopecia answer: Microscopic diagnosis is essential to predict outcomes with traction alopecia. Long-term traction alopecia can permanently damage follicles. To have realistic expectations when choosing hair growth treatments, we need to have microscopic representation of current hair follicle status. Microneedles/derma stamps help but are not alone going to promote hair regrowth from traction alopecia, best outcomes are achieved with combination therapy techniques.
Traction Alopecia – Histopathology
Traction alopecia exhibits variable features in the histopathology depending on the stage of the traction alopecia. The early stage is characterized by an increased number of telogen (shedding) and catagen (resting) hair follicles, with a normal number of hair follicles and soft fragile and swollen hair (trichomalacia). This is followed by drop-out of the terminal hairs and retained smaller-caliber hairs along the frontotemporal hairline (or other affected areas), reflected as vellus hairs. In later stages of traction alopecia, there is a decrease in the terminal follicle count which is replaced with fibrotic fibrous tracts. There is a characteristic absence of any inflammation with this type of hair loss.
Causes of traction alopecia
Traction Alopecia is a type of hair loss caused by constant pulling (“traction”). The hair pulling is usually on some hairs more than others leading to the development of bald patches. Often, this type of alopecia is due to the hairs being pulled repeatedly by tight hairstyles.
Traction Alopecia – Real Results
When microscopic diagnosis can determine the hair follicles are still somewhat open and in the second stage or early third stage, and the traction has ceased, there is a possibility for hair regrowth. The later stage with fibrous tracts is unlikely to achieve regrowth. In this case, the traction alopecia had ben there long-term, however the traction had ceased.
Microscope found general hair thinning on top of the traction. Going in with combination therapy hair growth treatment had an impact of overall hair growth and hair regrowth over time in the areas of traction.
Here is the hair growth treatment that achieved these results:
- Scalp Brush Therapy
- Absolique Scalp Cleanser
- Hair Shampoo and Hair Conditioner
- Microneedle Therapy
- Activance Clinician hair growth treatment
- GRN Grow.Revitalise.Nourish hair growth serum
Each traction case will be individual with no guarantees, however Trichologist Brisbane at Absolique Hair Health Clinic has seen great results over the years. It can simply take time and always using combination therapy working from the inside out.
